Harmonix is a “Best Company to Work For”

Harmonix

Wow, it seems like in the last week, Harmonix, through little to no effort of their own, has become a darling of the media.  And most of this attention is not a coincidence; Harmonix was recognized last week as the #1 best mid-size to work for, and the #3 best company overall to work for by The Boston Globe.  A tremendous accomplishment for everyone over at Harmonix, and I congratulate you all!  But what makes them so special?

Sure they make some unbelievable game franchises (I have to mention Amplitude and Frequency to satisfy the purists), but creativity, determination, and innovation exist at many companies, and these traits do not automatically grant the status of employer-of-choice.  Maybe it’s the fresh fruit brought in each week to replace the status quo comsumption of sugary snacks that fuel most video game development.  Maybe it’s the free Friday group lunches, acapella group competitions, and Boston Harbor staff boat parties.  Maybe it’s even the fact that they were featured in an answer on Jeopardy…

What is Rock Band?

But I think we get the clearest picture not from an outsider looking in, but rather from one of Harmonix’s own.  HMXTheBestSteph posted a story last night on RockBand.com talking specifically about what makes Harmonix such an awesome company to work for.  She lists a number of the perks Harmonix employees receive for giving their best every day, but most of this is cosmetic and cursory things that most companies are capable of.  What truly separates Harmonix, and this should surprise no one, is that it is filled with people who are passionate about what they do.  People who get up each morning and are excited to go to work.  Very few of us can say the same, yet Harmonix is populated entirely by these people.  Be sure to check out her full story here, featuring her and a number of her co-workers comments and contributions about working at Harmonix.

Also check out the two video pieces the Boston Globe pulled together featuring Harmonix, Eran Egozy (co-founder and CTO)’s passion for his company and the clarinet, and the winners of Harmonix’s acapella competition.

Congrats, Harmonix!

From all their tweets it does indeed sound like an awesome company to work for. People who enjoy their job are more likely to perform better at it too, and it really shows. Congrats Harmonix!
