“Actually Learn How to Play Music” in Rock Band 3
Dhani Harrison, who was one of the driving factors behind getting the Beatles: Rock Band made, is apparently now a consultant for Harmonix and MTV Games. He’s on tour with his band, thenewno2, and opening for Wolfmother, but he had a chance to interview with the Chicago Tribune, and this is what he had to say:
“I’m working on ‘Rock Band 3′ and making the controllers more real so people can actually learn how to play music while playing the game… Give me a couple years, it’s going to happen.”
The Boston Herald also managed to get some minor info out of Dhani regarding Rock Band 3:
Now Harrison is working on “Rock Band 3” to make it even more realistic. His goal: to get the game to actually teach people to play music, not just to pantomime in rhythm.
I assumed there would be some sort of progression in terms of gameplay from Rock Band 2 to Rock Band 3, but new, realistic peripherals that will actually allow you to learn how to play real music is a pretty significant jump in gameplay!

Sounds awesome, I appreciate that Harmonix takes time on each of their installments rather than just adding new songs and calling it a new game *cough*

Actually it’s adding most of the same songs and a couple new ones and calling it a game.

Aren’t you confused with guitar hero?
BUUUUUURN!!!
Good burn Anex
And I don’t mind waiting for a couple of years for a game that will teach me how to play real instruments.. It would give me time to save money for their peripherals after the World Cup next year (I’m planning on going)
This could be very interesting. I just want to know how he plans to do this and still incorporate the entire catalog from 1) the previous discs 2) the rock band store 3) the upcoming rock band network.
I’m not saying I doubt him or whatever… but this should be interesting!
This is great for the guitar and bass, but I don’t see how they can make the drums and vocals more realistic, aside from adding more pads and making cymbals standard part of the set.
No. No no no.
If I wanted to learn how to play the guitar, I would spend $150, buy a stratocaster, and learn. There are a multitude of ways for me to learn at my fingertips: websites, youtube, mxtabs, etc.
I play Rock Band because it is fun and because it is very much a game. I do not want anything other than a game. If this is even a /little/ bit like some of the programs I’ve seen out there for teaching guitar, I will be pissed.
Rock Band is a game. I dearly hope they do not forget that.

Lol, that would be great if it was real. This is fake people.
uh guys, that pic is a fake. it was used in a photoshop mashup “If Video Games Were More Realistic”. Not real, sorry.

That’s why the image caption references the photoshop contest… as well as the image being linked directly to the original image. The image is a parody of the real content of the story. The real peripheral prototype will look nothing like the one above.

I think it was obvious the picture was just an “idea/implication”. We’re not silly enough to believe that is the REAL controller.. -_-
I guess the other news we pull from this is that Rock Band 3 is “a couple years” away…
